Free-motion quilting with a Featherweight!  Yes, it can be done, and can be done very successfully.  The crucial thing to remember is that the engineers who designed the motor on your beloved Featherweight had no idea it would ever be used for such!  You MUST stop more often and allow the motor to cool.  This will keep the motor from overheating.  If you follow this simple rule, you will be able to safely use your machine for free-motion quilting.
